Japan Twang! 2026
Come to Japan Twang! An hour-long performance of Tsugaru-jamisen, a modern, improvisatory, and highly technical Japanese musical style performed on a three-stringed spiked lute called a shamisen. Translation and commentary will be provided by Joshua Solomon of Hirosaki University, Japan.

Kafu Lecture: Japan in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo in Japan, 1904-1905
Commemorating the 120th anniversary of the famous Japanese novelist Nagai Kafu’s study at Kalamazoo College, Professor Jeffrey Angles of Western Michigan University, a renowned translator, researcher of Japanese literature, and poet, will give a lecture based on his unique research into Kafu’s activities in Kalamazoo during 1904 — 1905. His lecture will cover the significant actions or contributions of Nagai Kafu that affected both Japan and Kalamazoo. This free event is open to the public, so please come with your family, friends, and neighbors.
