Join journalist and filmmaker Shiori Ito for a screening of her acclaimed documentary Black Box Diaries (2024), followed by a conversation with Dr. Noriko Sugimori, Professor of Japanese at Kalamazoo College, and students Annika Hokanson and Christopher DeWitt, as well as an audience Q&A.

Shiori Ito is an Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, journalist, writer, and activist whose work highlights issues of gender-based human rights. In 2020, TIME named her one of the 100 Most Influential People.
In Black Box Diaries, Ito chronicles her pursuit of justice after her own sexual assault by a prominent media executive and associate of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the legal case that followed, and her contribution to Japan’s #MeToo movement. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025 and has received numerous honors, including a Peabody Award.
