Join journalist and filmmaker Shiori Ito for a screening of her acclaimed documentary Black Box Diaries (2024), followed by a conversation with Dr. Noriko Sugimori, Professor of Japanese at Kalamazoo College, and student Annika Hokanson, as well as an audience Q&A.

Shiori Ito is an Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, journalist, writer, and activist whose work highlights issues of gender-based human rights. In 2020, TIME named her one of the 100 Most Influential People.
In Black Box Diaries, Ito chronicles her pursuit of justice after her own sexual assault, the legal case that followed, and her contribution to Japan’s #MeToo movement. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 97th Academy Awards and has also received a Peabody Award, among other honors.
